Illinois homeschool requirements: what you file, and when.

The Illinois rules in plain English - notice, testing, records, and the dates families actually miss. Verified against the official sources below on 2026-10-18.

Before anything else: this is orientation, not legal advice. Requirements change and local offices have their own habits. The sources at the bottom are the authority - check them before you file.

At a glance

Notice

No registration required. ISBE offers a voluntary registration form, and that is the whole filing landscape - homeschools are treated as private schools.

Where it goes: No one (voluntary ISBE registration only)

Testing and evaluation

No state testing requirement. If you test for your own purposes, results go to no one.

Subjects and records

Subjects: Instruction in the branches taught in public schools, in English (language arts, math, biological/physical science, social studies, fine arts, physical development/health)

Records: No state records mandate. Keep a transcript - districts re-entering public school set placement from your documentation.

The dates to put in your calendar

Want this handled? The Records Office drafts your Illinois notice or filing every year, keeps the deadline calendar, and builds the transcript and course descriptions colleges expect. Founding families: $99/year.
