North Dakota homeschool requirements: what you file, and when.

The North Dakota rules in plain English - notice, testing, records, and the dates families actually miss. Verified against the official sources below on 2026-10-18.

Before anything else: this is orientation, not legal advice. Requirements change and local offices have their own habits. The sources at the bottom are the authority - check them before you file.

At a glance

Notice

Statement of Intent to Supervise Home Education (SFN 16909) filed with your district superintendent each year for each child 7+, starting 5 days before you begin.

Where it goes: District superintendent (annual statement of intent)

Testing and evaluation

Nationally normed standardized achievement test in grades 4, 6, 8, and 10 (district test = district pays; your own choice = you pay; low scores trigger a monitoring sequence).

Subjects and records

Subjects: Parent-directed; supervising parent must hold a high school diploma (or be monitored by a certified teacher otherwise)

Records: Keep test results and progress records for the supervising file.
